Searching for a Locum Dentist in Australia?

My name is Tim Wenas. Since selling my busy 4 surgery private practice clinic  in 2023 (Verdant Dental) to have a (slightly) less stressful life, I've been doing some casual teaching at the University of Melbourne School of Dental Science. I'm based in Melbourne, and available for short term locum placements across Australia (including regional/rural locations) - I'm keen to explore our wide and wonderful country!

My services as a locum dentist

General and Emergency locum dentist

As a locum dentist, it's appropriate for me to provide general and emergency dental care. I choose not to perform implant or orthodontic care, advanced surgical procedures or ongoing endodontic treatments, but happy to provide emergency/palliative care  in these areas as required.

Respect for your clinic operations

I treat all staff and patients with the utmost respect, and am able to recognise and adapt to any clinic's treatment philosophies. I do not require specific instruments or materials, and can work with whatever  equipment is available.

Short term locum only

At this time, I am available for 1-2 week locum positions around Australia. Depending on your location, accommodation, travel costs and car provision can be negotiated.

Why engage a locum dentist?

Whether it's a holiday, emergency or other reason, your clinic cannot afford to be unproductive or closed from a lack of dental operators. As a clinic owner myself, I know of the regular outgoings costs including rent/lease/mortgages, wages, utilities, insurances and more. Your patients want to know their needs will be met to a high standard, and you can't afford to have your patients find another dental clinic.

As an experienced dentist and clinic owner myself, your business is in safe hands.

  • 25 years of dental experience as a practitioner and multiple private practice owner in Victoria
  • BDSc (Melb) 2000, MBA (2007) MMktg (2008)
  • University of Melbourne clinical supervisor since 2013
  • Member of the ADA and ADAVB, insured with Guild
  • Current Police Check, Working With Children's Check
  • Current Victorian Radiation Use Licence (valid for Automatic Mutual Recognition across other states, not endorsed for OPGs)
  • Compliant to hospital grade accreditation (evidence for HepB, MMR, Rubella, Pertussis, Varicella, Inluenza, Covid19, TB etc)

Keep patients loyal and production flowing

Benefits of having a locum dentist:

  • Don't close busy appointment books
  • Maintain revenue to support cashflow and outgoings
  • Keep patients happy and returning to your practice
  • You can take necessary time off for leave, holidays, medical care, emergencies and other essential requirements

Fees and costs

Locum services are available for the greater of a daily retainer ($800 +GST) or 50% of invoices (+GST) generated per day.

In addition, accommodation, travel costs  and car provision costs will be quoted per individual placement. Placements within Victoria (and possibly bordering areas of SA and NSW) will not incur car provision costs as I'll bring my own car.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why a retainer? Your clinic should be busy enough to generate enough production that the retainer is a nonissue.  If your clinic is so quiet that the retainer amount is considered too high, consider simply closing the clinic for the period instead.
  • Why 50% of invoices? This is a suitable remuneration for a short term locum. In addition, the percentage is calculated on invoices generated (not receipts) as it is the clinic owner's responsibility to ensure collections.

I operate under a company structure with ABN and will submit a tax invoice to you on completion of the placement, with payment expected within 7 business days. Clinics operating under a company or trust structure will require the personal guarantee of the companty/trust director or clinic owner.

How it works

Interested in my services? Please read on for more details.

Please review the above section on fees and costs to ensure you understand and accept.

Please send me a message (contact form at the bottom of this website) with your details, clinic location and dates required. If I am available, I'll contact you for more details, and organise a placement contract.

Following acceptance of the contract, feel relieved that your clinic will continue to operate in good hands. I'm happy to accept all guidance in how your clinic operates and strive to provide excellent performance for your staff and patients.

What sets me apart

As a practice owner myself, I've dealt with all the issues you've dealt with. Staff conflicts, patient demands, expectation management, fussy diva dentists, production issues and counselling. I managed 30 staff and dentists through Victoria's covid lockdowns and survived - nothing else can phase me anymore!

On time performance

I turn up early, rarely run late, and have excellent time management skills developed over 25 years of clinical practice.

Communication and interpersonal skills

Every patient and staff member is unique - I've developed a way to get along with everyone (well, maybe 99.9%) that I meet and work with.

Available across Australia

I'm happy to travel (almost) anywhere in Australia. Bear in mind travel costs apply and I am based in Melbourne.

A Christmas party gathering for my old dental clinic

  • I've decided to step away from clinic ownership for a while, in order to experience a bit more variety in life while also helping fellow dental clinic owners in need of locum dentists.

Get in touch early!

Last minute locum placements are much harder to accommodate - contact me well in advance where possible.

I have also worked and lived in regional Victoria (Morwell, Yarrawonga, Myrtleford) and love the country lifestyle - so don't hesitate to contact me if you're in a rural/regional location.
